The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the students to take up the baton and continue the relay, making a difference in their communities.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The North-West University (NWU) recently welcomed its new students, emphasising diversity and inclusion. The event was live-streamed from the Tsebonokeng Hall at the Vanderbijlpark Campus, setting the tone for the upcoming academic year.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including members of the NWU Council, senior management, and student leadership.

In his address, Principal and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bismark Tyobeka welcomed the first-year students to the NWU family. He acknowledged the sacrifices they had made and assured them that they were now part of one of the best universities in the world.

He highlighted recent rankings that placed the NWU in the top 5% globally and top 10% in Africa across several academic domains, providing evidence of the significant role of staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders in the NWU’s success.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the students to take up the baton and continue the relay, making a difference in their communities.

“The NWU is not just a prominent global player but also a force for change in the country through its teaching and learning, research, community engagement, and vibrant student life.”

Prof. Tyobeka stressed the importance of respect as the cornerstone of all NWU operations and encouraged students to embrace and uphold the institution’s values, committed to fostering an environment of inclusion and respect. He condemned any form of discrimination, whether based on race, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity, or any other grounds.

Prof. Sibusiso Chalufu, Executive Director for Student Life, congratulated the students for choosing the NWU and encouraged them to be involved in university activities, seizing all opportunities presented to them. He also informed them about the student leadership academy launched by the NWU last year, encouraging them to sign up and be part of it.

“You’ve made one of the best decisions in your life by choosing the NWU. Not only is the NWU renowned for its sports prowess and vibrant student life, but the university also provides academic and out-of-class support to ensure the development of its students,” he said.
