Our children deserve better!

"Today, it’s disheartening to see it in such disrepair."

SEDIBENMG.- On Saturday, Zakes’s Sports Corner attended a boxing tournament at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Zone 14, Sebokeng.

Once a beacon of our community, the facility now sadly falls short. Neglect has turned it into a refuge for the homeless and drug users. I vividly recall its grand opening, officiated by the late Steve Tshwete, Minister of Sports at the time, and local Gauteng MEC of Sports and Recreation, Peter Skosana.

This facility marked a milestone as the first of its kind in our community. Yet, today, it serves as a refuge for the homeless and drug addicts. How did we allow it to reach this state of neglect? Today, it’s disheartening to see it in such disrepair.

Recent events, including the discovery of a body on-site, highlight the lack of security and care. Emfuleni Local Municipality shoulders much of the blame, not only for neglecting this facility but for failing to maintain sports facilities across our community.

It’s disheartening to see a place meant for our children’s recreation become a site of such tragedy. It’s time for us as a community to reclaim our responsibility for maintaining these spaces.
