What you need to know: Du Preez court case

VANDERBIJLPARK. -  For the past three weeks everyone has been all abuzz regarding the Fanie du Preez court case. Du Preez is accused of murdering his wife Thea and two children Carlia and Phillip on 3 December 2015 in Vanderbijlpark  

 

What do we know about the court case thus far?

 

  1. Last week the court heard the fourth version of what happened on that tragic day, according to Fanie du Preez. First he said it was a house break-in, then it was Nigerian drug lords who forced him to shoot them. In the third version he stated that drug lords from Lebanon forced him to shoot and kill his family. According to his last version the Lebanese drug lords shot his family and he was hit over the head, and when he came to, he found his family murdered.

 

  1. Fanie du Preez said he was forced by Warrant Officer Alberts to write the statement in which he confessed to shooting and and kiling his wife and two children. (Third version). According to Du Preez he was promised bail if he confessed.

 

  1. After the investigation of the murder scene was done it was concluded that Thea was shot first (twice), Phillip was shot second, three bullets being fired in his room. Carlia was shot third – a total of six shots were fired in her room.

 

  1. A 9mm pistol and .38 revolver was recovered by Police in the roof hatch in the garage. The projectiles found in the rooms of the deceased as well as their bodies are those of these two firearms. Gloves were recovered on which were Du Preez’ DNA.

 

  1. According to warrant officer Alberts it was tesstified that Du Preez was calm at the scene as well as after he was arrested in connection with the murders. During the court proceedings he made notes as witnesses testified.

 

  1. According to Du Preez he was mistreated in the holding cells. He had to urinate into a mug and his feet were chained to the bars of the cell.

 

  1. After Du Preez was retrenched by his previous employer he received a sum of more or less R27 000. He tried to earn a living by doing odd jobs, like making furniture with pallets. He started a business selling sex aids

 

  1. Thea took out a policy worth R1.1mil ,which Du Preez claims he knew nothing about.

 

  1. Du Preez also faces charges for being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, and one charge for obstruction of justice.

 

  1. Judge De Vos will deliver his verdict tomorrow.
