MEYERTON. – In concerted efforts to ensure the safety of children in and around communities in Meyerton, police, together with various stakeholders, recently carried out a campaign dubbed ‘Your neighbour’s child is your child’. The event took place in Kuvukiland, Meyerton on November 13.

Speaking to North Ster, police spokesperson Constable Tlaleng Moloi reported that the idea for the campaign was ignited by a tragic incident that occurred recently, where two children died after eating suspected poisoned snacks they found in a neighbour’s yard.

“We have noticed that there are incidents that put children’s lives in danger and crimes that affect them negatively; this necessitates ongoing awareness and safety talks within our communities.

“The awareness campaign was conducted in the form of a door-to-door campaign, where stakeholders shared information about parenting skills with members of the community. Parents were urged to always strive to create a safe environment for the young ones in the community.
“We also addressed rape, child neglect, and gender-based violence and femicide.”

Moloi mentioned that after they completed the campaign, all stakeholders visited the families of the two deceased children to offer words of comfort.
