Luthando Academy hosts a three-bill theatre show

Vaal theatre lovers were treated to a collection of emotions, stories, and performances that left a lasting impression as Luthando Art Academy premiered two of their shows over the weekend.

VEREENIGING – The Vaal’s vibrant theatrical landscape came alive once again as Luthando Arts Academy recently presented a spectacular three-night triple-bill theatre show at the esteemed Vereeniging Civic Theatre.

This event marked a significant step in reviving the local theatre scene and showcasing the exceptional talent nurtured by Luthando Academy.

The three-night extravaganza featured a captivating lineup of productions, each with its unique flair and creative direction.

Audiences were treated to a collection of emotions, stories, and performances that left a lasting impression.

Katlego Dlamini’s “Sehokolo”, the first of the three productions, took the stage and wove a tale of intrigue and suspense that had the audience on the edge of their seats.

The storytelling expertise of Dlamini was evident in the way “Sehokolo” delved into complex characters and intricate plotlines.

“Sehokolo” takes inspiration from the challenges men face in life and is portrayed by a talented cast, including Timothy Mthimkhulu, Karabo Mofokeng, and Sabata Mofokeng.

The second offering, Nomasonto Radebe’s “Mmasediba,” pays tribute to the women who fought for democracy and their unyielding commitment to voicing their grievances.

The show was skillfully performed by two of the academy’s trainees, Refiloe Nhlapo and Seipati Tshwaela.

Finally, the triple bill theatre show reached its grand crescendo with Luyanda Sidiya’s “Dominion”, a play that explores the power vested in humans and the potential for it to be abused, turning them into dictators.

It is a gripping narrative of a foolish man’s rise and fall. The production featured outstanding performances by artists such as Timothy Mthimkhulu, Katlego Dlamini, Lonwabo Bhele, Seipati Tshwaela, Refiloe Nhlapo, Nomasonto Radebe, Karabo Mofokeng, and Sabata Mofokeng.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster about the shows, co-founding director of Luthando, Katlego Dlamini, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “It was our first time premiering ‘Sehokolo’ and ‘Masidiba,’ however, ‘Dominion’ was premiered in 2013 and has been taken to many countries, including China, Brazil, and New York.”

Dlamini also addressed the importance of showcasing their productions in the region, stating, “Many productions have faded away in the Vaal, and as an academy with many people born and bred here, we found it fitting to host these productions in our region to rekindle the theatre scene of our people. We saw that audience development was missing, and there was a need to reintroduce this lifestyle.”

Reflecting on the success of the event, Dlamini said, “The three shows saw people coming out in large numbers to support theatre. This was a long-cherished dream, and it officially came alive over the weekend. We are reclaiming vibrancy in our community and will be taking these productions to various places in the Vaal, continuing to do more incredible work.”
