Sharpeville elderly celebrate their heritage

The event was hosted by the Sharpeville Care of the Aged.

SHARPEVILLE. – Scores of elderly people from in and around Sharpeville recently gathered at the Rhoda Yende Hall in celebration of their diverse cultures and heritage.

The event was hosted by the Sharpeville Care of the Aged. The Sharpeville Care of the Aged is a center where the elderly go daily and part take in various programs. The center is operating from Monday to Friday. The center also boasts a gym that the elderly use to keep fit.

The heritage event boasted various activities such as musical performances, poetry, and storytelling. Performers also took to the stage to explain how weddings and traditional ceremonies are carried out in their different cultures.

Chairperson of the board of directors, Reverend Pogiso Dinkebogile says, “The center caters to elderly from various sections of Sharpeville and today they all shared their stories about how things are done where they come from.”

Dinkebogile said the celebration was not only for the elderly, as children from the Sharpeville Tshwaranang Creche also showcased traditional dances and sand different songs in celebration.
Some of the elderly women even prepared and served traditional food they prepared in commemoration of the day.
