Sebokeng Police Station resources inadequate for residents’ safety: DA

The station's allocation of resources is still based on the 2011 Census.

SEBOKENG. – The Sebokeng Police Station’s resources are stretched, and inadequate for crime prevention and visible policing to ensure the safety of its residents.

This was revealed by Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow MMC for Community Safety in the Emfuleni Local Municipality and DAs Constituency Head in Emfuleni Central, Dady Mollo who together with Crezane Bosch DA’s Member of Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPL) made an oversight visit to the police station yesterday, Wednesday, 13 September.

The police station serves an estimated 400,000 people and has only 49 allocated vehicles. The pair said that they were disappointed to learn that the station’s allocation of resources is still based on the 2011 census, which only caters to 213,000 people. The area has since doubled its population due to the increasing population and mushrooming of informal settlements.

Bosch and Mollo said that the continuous water cuts and nonfunctional generator have left the police officers with no option but to close the police station gates during load-shedding to ensure their safety.

Furthermore, the cells are said to have not been functional since 2016, and sewer and water leaks exist, and that the Department of Public Works is aware, but they have done nothing to fix the situation.

“The infrastructure challenges and shortage of resources are severely affecting the police’s ability to render services to their community. An urgent intervention is needed, and we demand that the National Government prioritize building an additional police station for the people of Sebokeng,” they said.
