Pit toilets are a disgrace

22 years after the first democratic elections, it is a disgrace that the people of Evaton are still subjected to using pit toilets. The use of these  ‘toilet tsa mokoti’  presents a danger to residents, in particular children.

Cases have also been reported where unwanted newborn children have been dumped into these toilets. The obvious danger also presented by these demeaning toilets is that they breed disease and harbour bacteria which can cause serious illness and even death in some cases. It is pleasing to note that something will soon be done to do away with the.

The local MMC and officials responsible must meanwhile make sure that they apply measures that keep Evaton residents safe. We must be clear about the issues of pit toilets; government must install proper toilets for the good citizens of Evaton.

It is indeed embarrassing that in 20 years of democracy there are still people, including children, exposed to these inhumane conditions. If government is serious about the lives of our people they would do well to consider placing proper facilities and provide a safe and clean environment soon. By the way, if I may ask where did the Evaton Renewal Project (ERP) end up?
