SAPS engages community and business fraternity

Allegations included improper investigation of cases, instances of bribery, and failure to apprehend drug peddlers even when caught by the community.

VEREENIGING. – In an effort to enhance relations between community members and the police, the management of the Sedibeng District Police organised an Imbizo. This event brought together community members, various organizations, and the business community to share their perspectives.

The Imbizo took place at the Vereeniging taxi rank on Thursday, August 10. Leading the community Imbizo was Sedibeng District SAPS Deputy Commissioner Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu.

Among the attendees were the Vereeniging Community Policing Forum (CPF), a representative from the Department of Home Affairs, SAPS management, and ELM Councilors. During this gathering, community members seized the opportunity to voice concerns about the insufficient policing in Vereeniging.

Allegations included improper investigation of cases, instances of bribery, and failure to apprehend drug peddlers even when caught by the community. Another grievance pertained to the rising number of illegal immigrants engaging in illicit activities within the town.

“One of our pressing issues is the scenario where we apprehend criminals, hand them over at the police station after catching them red-handed, only to encounter them on the streets the very next day. We suspect that the police might be tipping off criminals about upcoming operations, allowing them time to conceal their illegal substances,” residents stated.

Furthermore, community members highlighted the increasing number of vandalized houses in Vereeniging, which are now serving as shelters for criminals from different areas.

“While we have no intention of taking matters into our own hands, the continued failure of the police to carry out their duties may force our hand,” they expressed.

Addressing the matter of illegal immigrants, Bona Sera from the Department of Home Affairs assured that those lacking proper documentation would face deportation.

“Our primary focus is to ascertain the status of foreigners. Legality can be established through documentation. Any individual present in the country illegally will be subject to deportation. I encourage asylum seekers and legal immigrants to uphold the nation’s laws,” he asserted.

The Vaal Business Cooperation (VBC) called on SAPS management to play a more active role in ensuring safety and security within the Vereeniging area.

“The taxi rank initiative has yielded positive results, and we intend to maintain this progress. Our concern lies in the aspect of safety. Establishing effective law enforcement in our town is essential, and it’s crucial to determine the specific role SAPS will play in maintaining law and order,” they emphasised.

Nkhwashu urged community members to collaborate with the police by providing valuable intelligence that can aid in apprehending individuals involved in criminal activities.

“Your partnership is vital. It’s the only way we can triumph over criminal elements. If you possess any information that could lead to arrests, please visit our offices and share your insights,” he appealed.

Nkhwashu committed to relaying all feedback gathered from the community and stakeholders to Sedibeng District Police Commissioner General Nkhensani Lemba.
