Local kids represent Vaal in Italy

This means a lot to the development of Chess in the community.

SEDIBENG.-  Two local learners from Mohloli Maritime SOS and Kgutlo-Tharo Secondary School are in Italy to represent South Africa at the annual Soncini Social Cohesion Games which started on 22 July and will run to 31 July.

The two learners are Omohile Majola (15) who is a Grade 9 student at Mohloli Maritime SOS in Sharpeville, and Ngelosi Maloyi (15), who is a Kgutlo-Tharo Secondary School Grade 9 student. These two learners will represent South Africa in the Chess category after being selected for the Gauteng Province Chess.

The two are from Emfuleni Chess Association and Sharpeville Chess Development Club respectively which are headed by Lefu Lepota.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Lepota said the two learners have jetted out of the country over the weekend to represent South Africa in this 7th edition of the Tricolour Games. Lepota said the two learners were selected last year in Germiston when it was announced that Chess will be part of the Tricolour Games.

“We as Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association wish these athletes all the best and I have no doubt that they will make Sedibeng proud. It was not an easy process but because of their potential, they are now competing against the best in Chess in Italy. This came at the better time when we launched the Chess Clubs at the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Libraries,” said Lepota.

Meanwhile, Khanya Lesedi and Kgoro Ya Thuto learners from Heidelberg are also part of the South African team that will represent the country in this tournament. The three learners are Bontle Lekone (15), Zilyanda Kwepile (15), and Thaband Dube (16).

These above-mentioned learners play for the local development soccer team, Letta Stars FC from Ratanda in Heidelberg.
