Road under Boy Louw Bridge damages vehicles

Ward 15 Councillor Prudence Hlanyane has called upon the relevant departments within the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to address the road's condition. Hlanyane expressed her worries about the lack of attention given to the Boy Louw bridge.

VEREENIGING.- The road under the bridge on Boy Low Road towards Vereeniging has once again become a source of frustration for motorists, as it is plagued by water and large potholes, leading to vehicle damage. For several years, the bridge has been problematic, often flooding during the rainy season, forcing drivers to find alternative routes, such as passing through Sharpeville to reach Vereeniging.

After receiving numerous complaints about the road’s condition, Ster North arrived at the scene to find two security guards assisting motorists. These guards directed drivers to avoid the large potholes and prevent damage to their vehicles.

Alfred Tshabalala, a security guard at the Leeuwkuil pump station, expressed his concern about the longstanding issue. Tshabalala explained: “The constant flooding has caused significant damage. Our goal is to prevent accidents and protect drivers from damaging their cars.”

Drivers who are unaware of the road’s condition have experienced car damage, while traffic has been rerouted through Sharpeville, causing inconvenience for commuters and affecting scholar transport.

ELM Media Relations Officer Chuchi Radebe acknowledged the municipality’s awareness of the road’s condition, assuring that plans are underway to address the situation.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, during a recent meeting with ELM, mentioned the allocation of a budget for road maintenance. Additionally, 40 roads in Emfuleni have been identified for rehabilitation.

It is clear that the road conditions on Boy Low Road, particularly under the bridge, pose significant challenges for motorists. Efforts are being made by security guards and concerned officials to mitigate the damage and address the issue.

The municipality’s acknowledgment and plans for rehabilitation provide hope for improved road conditions in the future.
