SHARPEVILLE. – The Sedibeng Boxing Association will stage the Regional Boxing Championship in the Sharpeville Hall this Saturday.
This mouth-watering news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the Emfuleni Sports and Recreation Organiser, Thanduxolo Madikizela. According to Madikizela they will select a team to represent Sedibeng in the forthcoming Provincial Boxing Championship scheduled to take place in Pretoria next month.
This weekends tournament will see Gauteng’s top boxing clubs and boxers pitted against each other to select ‘the best of the best.’ This will be the first time boxing returns to Sharpeville in a long time. This township produced household names such as Carlton ‘Swing Carlie’ Monnakgotla and many others. In the past Sedibeng – formerly known as the Vaal Triangle – was a centre of boxing. “Yes I’m quite aware that it has been a while since boxing was staged in Sharpeville and we invite those former boxers to attend this historical event. We have invited teams all over Gauteng and the Free State to come and participate in this boxing championship,” says Madikizela. Some local boxing clubs that will form part of the tournament include the newly established Boipatong Royals Boxing Club, AK Boxing Club, Olympians, and the MGT Boxing Club, to mention but a few.
