A 25-year-old woman from Ikageng gave birth to a baby boy while trying to relieve herself of an excruciating stomach cramp last Thursday.

According to the Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom, the woman was admitted to the hospital with severe bleeding shortly after the delivery. During the medical examination, the hospital discovered that she has given birth and the matter was brought to the attention of the police. The woman later admitted that she had had no idea that she was pregnant. After suffering severe abdominal pain, she tried to get some relief on a bucket she was using as a toilet. She got the shock of her life when the baby was born.
“While she was away at the hospital, the woman’s 47-year-old mother took the baby in the bucket and hid it in their other family home in Top City. The following day (Friday), she went to visit her daughter in the hospital and both confessed to the social worker,” Trom said.
The social worker notified the police on the same day and they questioned the two women at around 16:00. They asked them to take them to the scene in Top City. “On arrival, the police found a one-month premature baby boy wrapped in a towel on the bed. All the relevant personnel visited the scene; the baby was declared dead and taken to the Potchefstroom mortuary.
The police are investigating a case of concealment of birth,” Trom reported.
