Ward Based HIV-Aids Educators finally get paid

Patience and constant pressure can pay-off in a positive way, sometimes.

SEDIBENG. – The Sedibeng HIV/Aids Ward Based educators finally got paid last week, days after staging a sit in at the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) offices in Vereeniging where they were allegedly removed by police.

Some later slept outside the SDM office saying that they were not going anywhere without their two- and three-month’s backdated salaries owed to them. They also demanded to be briefed about promises that were made to them of being ‘absorbed’ (integrated) by the Department of Health.

“ We are being taken from pillar to post we ask about our monies and the promises made to us,” they told Sedibeng Ster last week.

Sedibeng Ster also reported earlier this month that the SDM acknowledged that the educators were paid one month relief stipend and that the outstanding balance will be paid upon the HIV/AIDS Grant receipt. These educators provide HIV and TB counselling and testing services at clinics to patients in compliance with the project’s HIV and TB service profile and reporting requirements. They also support community-based HIV Testing Services (HTS), working closely with the Outreach Teams.

“Finally, we just got our outstanding payments. Through continuous efforts and commitment,” as a sign of relief, the workers said this week.
