The community of Emalahleni in Mpumalanga will move to a different beat when the I Choose 2 B Active Bootcamp is staged at Sy Mthimunye Stadium on Saturday, 10 December 2022 at 7am.

To increase heart rates and break some sweat, the Bootcamp will kick start with a 3-5km walk around the Emalahleni community. This will be followed up with Indigenous Games’ Aerobics Activation which will encourage citizens to see the value of the games played outdoors in promoting physical activity participation.

The Aerobics activation will feature certified instructors who will engage a community of healthy-inspired participants working out to challenge head-on the norm of sedentary lifestyles, hence the apt reference to this bootcamp e as Ayihlome Ihlasele Bootcamp.

The certified instructors will conduct an energy-filled choreographed group exercise class featuring indigenous games such as Hopscotch and Tug-of-war among many others at the bootcamp. DJs will be on standby to add a festive ambiance with pulsating tunes that will keep attendants on their toes. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

This community outreach activation is aimed at empowering citizens from communities in and around Mpumalanga with skills which they can use every day to start, pursue as well as commit to positive and physical active lifestyle habits.

Also touted as Ayihlome Ihlasele (Arm and Attack), the bootcamp challenges the norm of sedentary lifestyles head-on, hence the apt moniker. It will be a hybrid outreach activation targeting 500 people in the stadium and many more streaming online on the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s I Choose 2 B Active online platforms of Zoom, Facebook and TikTok.

The I Choose 2 B Active Bootcamp was launched in 2015 as an initiative of the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. It is a 365-day call to action whose mission is to see 50% of South African citizens commit to life-long habits of being physically active regularly by 2030.

The Bootcamp hosted at Sy Mthimunye Stadium in Emalahleni is in partnership with Cell C; Mpumalanga Provincial Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation as well as Emalahleni Local Municipality in the Nkangala District.

The presence of both public and private sector in partnership to this activation affirms the realisation by all sectors in society that the health of citizens has taken centre-stage and interventions are needed to help citizens prioritise living a healthy life. The benefits are many such as a health system that is not burdened by chronic disease patients and this will translate positively in public expenditure and the economy.

The Government through the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture calls on all South African citizens from all walks of life to rally their families, neighbours and all communities to participate virtually in this activation wherever they are by logging on to the department’s @IChoose2BActive social media platforms.
