Botebo-Tsebo learners disrupt Ramaphosa’s Imbizo

Gauteng Premier David Makhura and President Cyril Ramaphosa had to intervine and take out angry and unruly learners from the  President's Imbizo in Sharpeville recently.

SHARPEVILLE.- This was after Botebo-Tsebo Senior Secondary learners from Zone 14, in Sebokeng wanted answers as to why for more than 14 months their school has been without electricity.

The programme director, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga could not control leaners and things got out of her hands and that is when Ramaphosa stood up and said, “I am in control, this is my space”, he asked Motshekga to take a seat as he took charge of the proceedings. The GautengMEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi also stood up tried to speak to the learners but it took Gauteng Premier David Makhura to calm them down.

The learners who refused to sit down told the public that they have lost a lot of learning time because of the electricity issue. They told Makhura that about R1 million was paid to Eskomby the Sedibeng District’s Department of Education but that they still had no electricity.

“How can we study by candles, yet the same government is expecting good results (from us)”.

Many parents at the Imbizo sympathized with the learners and clapped hands while the meeting was stopped to control the situation that nearly went out of control. Some parents insisted that the learners had the right to be heard. At the end the learners made sure that they air their grievances in front of the President.
