American Cheerleading is now a Vaal thing too!

SASOLBURG. - All Star Cheerleading is a competitive sport, especially in the United States of America, and is now becoming a popular sport in South Africa as well.

The Vaal Cheerleading Club (VCC) is proud to be the first of its kind in the Vaal Triangle. The club opened its doors last year in April.

All Star Cheerleading, also known as American Cheerleading, involves a routine composed of stunting, tumbling, pyramids, tosses, cheering and choreographed forms of dancing.

Where most school-based cheerleading teams in South Africa provide cheerleading to cheer on other sport teams, this form of cheerleading is the team!

“A common misconception is that cheerleading does not qualify to be a sport on its own, or even that South African cheerleading is not very far developed, however this is not the case,” says Denicke Coleman, owner of VCC.

The club is registered with SAMCA (South African Majorettes and Cheerleading Association) and therefore offers the opportunity to take part in competitions at provincial and national levels, as well as the opportunity to obtain provincial and national colours.

Competitive cheerleading has been recognised as an Olympic sport since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted its full recognition in July 2021.

This is how you do it!

Every two years, the national team of South Africa competes in the ICU World Championships in the USA.

“There are endless possibilities in the world of cheerleading, and our dream at the VCC is to expose our youth to this unique experience,” says Denicke.

The club trains all year-round to prepare for competitions hosted by SAMCA, as well as local competitions like the annual competition hosted by 90.6 FM.

“An integral characteristic of this sport is that every team member is vital to the team and performance. Everyone plays an important role. We train athletes to develop their skills, but they also learn the importance of respect, discipline, dedication, commitment, self-confidence, sportsmanship and teamwork,” says Denicke.

If you reside in the Vaal Triangle, between 9 and 17 years old and would like to give cheerleading a go, now is your time to sign up! Boys and girls are welcome and no previous experience is necessary.
