General Smuts’ debating team redeems school name

With their school's name having been in the news for all the bad reasons recently, the recently formed General Smuts High Schools’ debating team aims to bring back the good name that the school has been known for, for years.

VEREENIGING. – Through the mentorship of their English teacher, Xoliswa Thetha, the learners, of different ages, from different grades and classes are aiming high.

The learners told Sedibeng Ster that even after the heartbreaking news about a gang in the school that tormented learners, that broke out recently, there is a lot of positive developments in the school that are currently happening and are not in the main domain. The team is made up of Khanyisile Moleli (Grade 9E), Tsholofelo Tsupa (Grade 10B), Bafana Mavuso (Grade 10B) and Zintle Mthimkulu (Grade 10B).

“Even though there were news that pulled our school through the mud recently, all is not lost, and through the help of our teacher, Ms Thetha, as a group of learners we still (see) saw potential in the school,” they said.

The learners added that the debate group has been formed to try and gain the school’s glory and respect back.

“As a group, we are striving for a better future and have gone for radio interviews and many more events to follow the group aims to change and transform the school into what it once used to be.”
