Honing your talent can take you far in life

A young girl from the dusty streets of Sharpeville believes that honing one’s talent is the secret to success.

SHARPEVILLE. – 11-year-old Tshepiso Mothakama, a talented young athlete from the Sharpeville Athletics Club, says running has always been her passion.

Mothakama recently took the number one spot when she participated in a 5km run in Heidelberg where her team was competing with other teams.

Speaking to Ster, Mothakama said that running has given her an opportunity to see a lot of places. In the past, Mothakama along with other athletes were granted an opportunity to fly to Port Elizabeth for a running competition.

“Running has become my passion and through it I have gotten better academically. I am able to balance my school work and still nurture my talent.”

Mothakama encourages her peers to take up a hobby and explore, as it will help them get away from negative things happening in the community and also widen their perspective when coming to different careers they can explore. Mothakama explained that she always goes into competitions with the highest confidence because she always does well.

Mothakama is a Grade 5 learner at Matsie Steyn Primary School. She states that she gets a lot of support from her teachers, the principal and her peers.

Mother Nthabiseng Mothakama says she is very fortunate to have two girls that love sports, as she does not have to worry about them getting into negative things.

“Her younger sister plays Chess, while she has a love for running.

“We are very supportive of their talents and hope they go far and want them to go very far with their talents.”
