Zamdela Hostel fire victims live in shambles

All of their clothing, Identity documents and furniture have burned to ashes.

ZAMDELA.-The disgruntled families from the 16  hostel flats units that were mysteriously destroyed by the fire at the Umgababa Flats in Zamdela, Sasolburg are still waiting for a good Samaritan to help them.

The fire, that happened in March this year left the family members with only the clothes they were wearing, after the incident five people were admitted at the local hospital for inhalation of smoke. The Metsimaholo Local Municipality has since provided them with tents. Attempts by the municipality to move them to one of their empty buildings, initially meant to be offices, opposite the filling station has hit rock bottom. Pulane Mofokeng, a mother of two said they refuse to occupy the building.

“Those offices were built about eight years ago and even the municipality has failed to utilise them. It means there’s something they are scared of,” she said.

Meanwhile, with winter on the way, the residents need whatever help that can be offered.
