As South Africa braces itself for the onset of this year’s cold fronts, The Salvation Army is appealing to the public to donate blankets, clothing and food for those in need.
PR Secretary for the Southern Africa Territory of The Salvation Army, Major Carin Holmes, says: “Every year, we see more and more people coming for help to our doors. With unemployment at such high levels in our country, people are finding it ever more difficult to make ends meet.
“Your generous donations really go a long way towards helping us fulfill their needs,” she added.
With winter weather already having caused havoc in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and another cold front set to hit Gauteng this weekend, Major Holmes says that the organisation anticipates a great many appeals for assistance during the season.
The Salvation Army assists people by providing shelter, food, clothing and blankets to help them through the cold winter months.
“Giving help can be as simple and easy as sending an SMS message to our Helpline, 42290, with the word “Winterhelp” in the SMS. The cost of the SMS is only R30, the vast majority of which we receive and which goes towards assisting the needy,” Major Holmes said.
