Gauteng celebrates Freedom Day

The Gauteng City Region will be celebrating Freedom Day under the theme “Freedom is in your hands” on Wednesday, 27 April 2016 at the Union Buildings in Tshwane.

The day will start with a 4 KILOMETER WALK / PARADE dubbed “Walk 4 Freedom” from the Palace of Justice (Church Square) to the Union Buildings and will be led by Premier David Makhura.  Diverse cultural groups, the South African Police Service Brass Band, the Department of Community Safety Motorcade and Metro Police Motorcades, are some of the activities planned for this inaugural walk.

This year’s Freedom Day will be celebrated as a family fun day and communities are urged to bring their picnic baskets and camp chairs and join in the celebration of South Africa’s 22 years of freedom. Exhibitions, food stalls, crafts, entertainment and more will be available.

“Freedom Day is about celebrating our common identity and pride,” says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko.  “For us, Gauteng is about families, friends and everyone coming together and embracing our convictions and dedication to moving the city region and South Africa forward,” she continues.

“On this day we call upon the people of Gauteng to join us as we come together to enjoy the freedom brought upon us, not only by the fallen freedom fighters but also by each one of us,” concludes Mazibuko.
