Three steps to make sure your move is covered

Learn how to keep your insurance up to date and your premiums low every step of your move.

Moving house can take you on an emotional rollercoaster. It’s exciting, terrifying, fun, stressful and exhilarating all at once! One thing people often don’t think about, as they tick off all the items on the long to-do list during their move, is insurance.

Do you know if your existing contents insurance policy protects your belongings while in transit? No? Take a look at these three steps from PSG Insure to make sure your items are covered from point A to point B.

  1. Pre-move: Cover only what you are moving with

There is no better time to declutter and get rid of items you no longer need than when we are moving. Once you have decided which contents are moving with you, update your insurer to let them know what changes you have made and which items you no longer have. Doing so will prevent you from paying more than you need to in insurance premiums.

  1. Mid-move: Check that the type of transport is covered

If you opted for a professional moving company to transport your belongings, ask your insurer exactly what terms and conditions would apply should they cover your move. Should your policy not cover the transportation of your goods, think about taking out a Household Goods in Transit policy. Alternatively, you can check if the moving company’s quote includes an insurance cover, although this is often a more expensive option. If friends and family are helping you move, insurance will usually only cover your belongings in the event of an accident, not against theft.

  1. Post-move: Update your insurance policy

Check for any damages caused by the movers while you unpack and submit your insurance claim timeously to avoid missing the deadline. Be cautious about how you dispose of packaging of any new electronics to avoid being a target for crime. Give your insurer your new address and let them know if you have moved into an estate or a lower crime area or have done any security updates to help bring your premiums down. If you have sold your previous home, keep it insured until the transfer to the new owners is complete.
