Boiketlong residents on protest a week after elections

SEBOKENG. - Just a week after the Local Government Elections, frustrated residents of Boiketlong Informal Settlement barricaded roads in demand of housing.

Residents said they were unhappy about the recent allocation of houses in the area by Emfuleni Local Municipality’s MMC for Housing, Edwin Kele. Residents alleged that during the allocation of complete houses just across Boiketlong, some of the names that were called were of people living outside the area.

“There have been various allocations of houses in Emfuleni. Boiketlong residents have never attended any of those allocations.

“We never demanded to be made beneficiaries of projects outside Boiketlong. It is our turn to receive houses. Our houses are being given to outsiders.”

Residents wish that the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura can come and address them. Kele says: “There are about 1900 people who have applied for a subsidy, only 1300 have been approved.

“About 520 RDP houses are ready to be allocated.” He said residents living in phase one are supposed to be moved out to make space for more houses. “

The burning issue is that it is not everyone living there who qualifies to get a house.”

Kele said some residents were kicked out by the computer system for having benefited before, while others earn more salaries. He concludes that others are foreigners and could not benefit from the project.
