“As I research who my father is through other peoples’ eyes, I realised that I am living with a legend in the same roof."

The exhibition on the 19th will be observing the 19th October 1977, clampdown of the Black Newspapers, Journalists and Photojournalist.  Amongst the prominent once, was The World and the Weekend World newspaper editor Percy Qoboza, Aggrey Klaaste, the photographer Moffet Zungu and the photojournalist Zuluboy Molefe who were detained during the clampdown.

Bra Len Khumalo as a photojournalist is in the league with the prominent photographers such as his older brother the late Alf Khumalo, Peter Magubane, Mike Mzileni and Sam Nzima.  The exhibition is also saluting the present journalists and photojournalists such as Moleboheng Chaha, Lerato Serero, Zacharia Nale and Lazarus Dithagiso of Sedibeng Ster, and Patience Bambelele of Sowetan amongst the others.

“Len Khumalo has sacrificed a lot for us as his children, his immediate family, extended family, his community, his colleagues in the field and the country at large.” states Nkululeko Khumalo the daughter of Bra Len Khumalo and a senior lecture at Vaal University of Technology in the department of Visual Arts and Graphic Design.

“As I research who my father is through other peoples’ eyes, I realised that I am living with a legend in the same roof. How can this man who has been shot so many times, stepped, tortured, and burned with boiling water yet he continues to tell his story. His life experience as he continues telling us about the South Africa’s untold stories and history. As I view majority of his photographs, we realised that most of the people in the photographs are from our surroundings and locations. This is why we decided to focus on Len Khumalo Kasi tour. Bring the exhibition to the people who are in the photographs. As the people can relate to their own photographs and also to be able to share their own stories of the various events.”

Nkululeko Khumalo the daughter and curator of Leonard Khumalo’s Photographic Kasi Tour  exhibition is fascinated to be part of this travelling exhibition. The Len Khumalo Kasi Tour will be having a travelling exhibition to places such as: Sharpeville Memorial site, Boipatong Museum, Evaton Wilberforce, Luthando Arts Academy, Rust-Ter-Vaal Community Hall, Art Village at Theoville, Vanderbijlpark and Springs Art Gallery.
