Kgomoco Primary School teachers and learners embark in a cleaning campaign

“This situation forced us as the school staff to take action to do something about this situation by cleaning our environment."

SHARPEVILLE.- Kgomoco Primary School teachers, general workers and leaners embarked on a cleaning campaign recently. This initiative was meant to create awareness to the nearby community especially those who dump  next to the school yard. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, one of the teachers who came up with this initiative, Meisie Phakathi said last week part of the school premises was on fire due to irresponsible dumping and burning of rubbish. “This situation forced us as the school staff to take action to do something about this situation by cleaning our environment. We appeal to members of community to take responsibility and look after the school as their children spend most of their time here. It is responsibility of every resident to keep the environment clean,” she said. Phakathi hailed this cleaning campaign as a success with teachers, general workers and leaners working together to clean outside the school yard where the members of the community dump the rubbish. As part of this campaign, Phakathi told Sedibeng Ster that as a school they plan on turning the open space into a park and a food garden. Phakathi said they have planted few flowers and hope to get seedlings for vegetables and plant them with the main aim being to encourage the community to look after the garden and benefit from it. However, Phakathi believes there is still a long way in educating the community members since the municipality is also not making it easier by collecting waste in the area.
