VANDERBIJLPARK. – Tradition is always laudable and the tradition of circumcision is no exception. Well, almost. The exception to the praiseworthy nature of maintaining tradition lies in the unfortunate loss of life every year following the performance or the procedure of traditional circumcision.
Circumcision is looked upon by a number of cultures as being the admission to manhood and is carried out by adult men when they are running a traditional school of initiation.Such activity is usually shrouded in the strictest secrecy. The ritual performance of this procedure is usually painful and creates massive anxiety in the person who is to be subjected to this procedure. Circumcision by a qualified doctor and nurses includes the administration of a local anaesthetic around the shaft of the penis, rendering the foreskin totally numb and allowing the procedure to be carried out in a painless fashion. Such a method is therefore strongly recommended in order not only to exclude a painful experience but also to minimise the transmission of one or more sexually transmitted diseases.
