MEYERTON.- An attempted armed robbery in Gemsbok Street, Extension 6, Meyerton ended in the arrest of three robbers last Thursday.
Thanks to a swift response from the armed reaction company, Afri Guard and the police, the suspects were apprehended at the scene.
Two handguns apparently used by the suspects during the robbery were also seized. According to Police Spokesperson, Constable Tlaleng Moloi, the victim was driving out of the yard with her daughter in a vehicle that afternoon when the robbers made their appearance.
“The woman tried to open the gate, but it did not work. She got out of the car to see what was wrong. She then discovered that the gate had been bent. She straightened the gate and returned to the vehicle. Before she could get back in the car, one of the men put his hand over her mouth. She then also saw the other two (suspects),” said Moloi.
According to Moloi, the victim noticed that one of the men was armed with a pistol.
Moloi said that the suspects demanded the victims’ key to her house and proceeded to lock her, and her daughter, in the house.
They then allegedly ordered the victim and her daughter, as well as their domestic worker, to sit down, after which the suspects tied everyone up.
According to Francois Uys, Operations Manager of Afri Guard, they received a tip-off call at around 14:54 , after which the Tactical Unit went to the victims’ house.
According to Uys, an Afri Guard’s officer gained access to the victim’s premises through the back door where he first fired a warning shot and was able to disarm the suspects.
In addition to weapons, cell phones, gloves, and a stolen Volkswagen Kombi were also seized from the suspects.
