How to care for your afro

Natural hair tips from celebrity Carol Ofori.

Television and radio personality Carol Ofori has always loved her natural hair. While the presenter has often experimented with wigs and braids, Carol admits that wearing her hair naturally makes her feel most confident.

Over the past few years, the star has put in a lot of work to ensure that her natural hair is healthy and looking its best. Now, in a bid to celebrate natural hair, she shares some tips to help you keep your afro strong, healthy and shiny.

Moisture is your hair’s best friend

The key to getting an afro to look good is moisture, says Carol, adding that water is “your afro’s best friend.” However, she warns that it’s important to find that “sweet spot” between too much and too little when washing your hair.

Use products to keep your hair healthy

Moisturising products are important to keep your afro looking nourished and full. “(Afros need) lots and lots of love” she explains. “I like using argan oil, as well as avocado and grapeseed oil to help lock in the moisture. These oils are really good for your hair and help keep your afro shiny.”

Wear protective hairstyles

When it comes to changing your hairstyles, keep your natural hair in an environment that promotes growth, suggests Carol. “So, braids, cornrows and other hairstyles that protect your natural hair will be the best way to ensure growth and healthy hair.”

Section out your hair while combing

For best results, comb your hair in sections. Carol likes to divide her afro into four separate parts and comb each one gently and thoroughly. “It will make all of the difference,” she promises.

Never sleep with your afro out

Caring for your hair during sleep is an important part of the process, says Carol. ‘”Never sleep with your afro out… (rather) try twisting your hair before bed. Use moisturising products while you do this and again in the morning when you remove the twists from your hair. Trust me, this is a gamechanger.”
