Gauteng death toll rises to 19 as people continue to loot

In Sebokeng, residents have flooded various shopping centres and continued to loot  and vandalise infrastructure.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has confirmed that 19 people have died in the province since the start of rioting and violence in  Gauteng.

This is a rise of 13 fatalities from the six that was initially reported by Police Minister Bheki Cele during his address this morning.

Makhura said that 10 of those people died during a stampede at the Ndofaya Mall in Meadowlands, Soweto this morning. In a media briefing, Cele confirmed the 10 fatalities adding that the number could increase.

453 people have been arrested in the province so far.

Cele said police would work hard to ensure that leaders and instigators of violence would not only be arrested but prosecuted as well.
