"We are fighting for our basic rights. We are not violent. Water and electricity are the basics for the human rights."

VANDERBIJLPARK. The members of the Bophelong Service Delivery under the leadership of the Solidarity Community Association nearly clashed with the SAPS and a private security company at the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM)  main building in Vanderbijlpark recently.

At the time of their arrival, they hoped to meet with Executive Director (ED) for Infrastructure. However, they were informed that the officials responsible were not available.

The clashes happened at the time the angry residents arrived, only  to be met with locked gates. The protesters demanded electricity and water, they said that they have been without electricity for more that three weeks. On the issue of water, it is more than five days since ELM announced the damaged main water pipe in Vanderbijlpark.

“We are fighting for our basic rights. We are not violent. Water and electricity are the basics for the human rights, open our taps.”
Later an arrangement was made for the residents to come meet with the (ED) the following day.
