Boipatong riddled with sewer spills

Boipatong residents are desperate for a permanent solution regarding leaking sewage pipe complications in the area, which has left raw sewage flowing in almost every street.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Residents said that they struggled to get employees from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to come up with a lasting solution to the unhygienic problem. The Democratic Alliance has called on the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Lebohang Maile to address the sewage spills in the area.

“The DA has been inundated with calls from residents of Mamelodi Street at Extension 2 in Boipatong near Sharpeville who have had enough of the raw sewage that has been plaguing the area for years.

“The sewage is spilling into the streets and residents’ properties, due to blocked pipes, and is making their lives unbearable.

“The municipality occasionally attempts to fix the blocked pipes, but they continue to leak sewage.

“This is a clear indication that the municipality lacks the tools, fleet and the necessary capacity to do the work.”

The DA said if the municipality continues to ignore the problem, the residents will be exposed to increasingly serious health risks.

“MEC Maile should visit the area to experience and witness first-hand what it is like to live with the constant stench. The DA will not rest until the sewage spills are addressed.
