2021 Makeup Trends

Makeup has proven itself resilient by introducing new trends and enhancing the old even during the pandemic.

Skincare routines were the order of the day last year. We settled with just applying lotion to our faces because there were no events we could wear our makeup to. Despite the nature of 2020, the beauty industry still thrived, which has paved the way for the trends set to take over the industry by storm this year – mask or no mask.

Let’s take a look at this year’s makeup trends:

Colourful Eyelashes

Eyelash extensions have always been a must-have. They give much more volume than traditional mascara and they go with every look. This year, colourful lashes take it up a notch.

This look is achieved by mixing a lightweight concealer with some powder eyeshadow. The mixture is then applied to the strand of eyelashes, giving it a pop of colour. Trending colours are neon pink and lime, with blue giving a cooling effect. Warmer shades such are red and orange are also becoming a thing.

Colourful eyelashes are also making the rounds on Instagram. They seem to work very well with lined eyeshadow and monocoloured applications. These lashes become the main focus of any look and are definitely the next big thing!

Subtle Makeup Application

There is no doubt that over time, we have all become unused to heavyweight makeup because of the lockdown – especially the full face beat. Subtle makeup application is going to trend this year.

One of the reasons why this look is so comfortable is because it accommodates facial masks well. We still love the contouring and highlighting but where is the fun in it if our masks are going to cover it all up and possibly wipe it off?

A light application of foundation and neatly brushed eyebrows with a nude eyeshadow seems to work well for this look. Don’t forget lip balm to moisturise your lips!

The Clear Lip Gloss

Clear lip gloss is a 2020 carryover and it was also quite popular even before 2020. There is a reason why this look keeps winning.

After makeup application, the face becomes more structured, giving primary focus to the enhanced natural features. What the clear lip gloss achieves is a more pronounced colour of the natural lip – making lips look more plump and succulent.

It also has less work in terms of application. All you have to do is fade a brown liner along the edges of your lips just to give them more volume and subtle colour. This look is high up there with the makeup gods!

Faux Freckles

YouTube is flooding with faux freckle application tutorials. Although there is a freckle pen for this look, it can still be achieved in other inexpensive ways.

Faux freckles have become the ultimate makeup fetish this year. To achieve the perfect freckle look, let your makeup first set before applying different sizes of dots around your cheeks and under eyes. These dots must have different shades; some should be darker than others. A brown gel eyeliner works best.

Faux freckles are trending and they pretty much suit any look! They blend in perfectly with subtle makeup and even better with a sun-kissed look.

Makeup is all about preference. Whether you favour it heavy or light, there will always be a trend for your preference. 2021 makeup trends are all about innovation and every makeup lover is accommodated.
