Ignore the ‘massive’ grille. Here’s the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible

The BMW 4 Series Convertible is scheduled to arrive in South Africa later in 2021.

BMW has pulled back the covers off its new 4 Series Convertible and like the coupe counterparts, it wears the big nose.

Scheduled to arrive in South Africa later in 2021, the 4 Series Convertible has ditched the hard-top roof for a soft-top.

According to BMW, the soft-top is 40kg lighter and offers more boot space than the outgoing model. The boot space is measured at 255 litres and that should be enough to swallow sizeable items such as bags and grocery items.

Opening and closing the roof can be done within 18 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. The roof comes standard in black colour and buyers can have an optional Moonlight top that comes with a metallic shimmer.

Like most convertibles, the new 4 Series adds stiffer side skirts, an aluminium shear panel at the front, and reinforced transmission tunnel, and a rigid rear floor plate.

The engine line-up in the normal 4 Series Coupe is likely to soldier on. It consists of a 420i Coupe, 420d Coupe and 440i xDrive Coupe.

The 420i comes fitted with a four-cylinder petrol engine with 135 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque as well as an eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

The BMW 420d Coupé is equipped with a four-cylinder in-line diesel engine as well as a 48V mild-hybrid technology. The engine alone makes 140 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque while the mild-hybrid tech makes 8 kW. It gets the same 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

A 420d with the xDrive system as well as a 440d with xDrive could also join the line-up at a later stage.

The range-topping M440i xDrive employs a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine that is matched to a 48V mild-hybrid technology. The engine gushes out 275 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque while the mild-hybrid system makes 8 kW of power.

The 4 Series Convertible will reach our shores months after the local launch of the 4 Series Coupe.
