Sedibeng and Emfuleni MMCs help homeless Gogo

The fired started in the shack which is next to her house, due to a paraffin stove which was left unattended.

BOPHELONG. – For month’s now, Sedibeng Ster has been reporting incidents of houses and shacks that have burned down due to a fire or electrical fault in the area.
The Dlamini family, in Muvhango, is the latest victim of a blaze which left them homeless last week. Attempts by the community to fight the flames were unsuccessful. To make the situation worse, this incident happened midday.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mariam Dlamini said that the fired started in the shack which is next to her house, due to a paraffin stove which was left unattended. When Sedibeng Ster arrived, the community and community leaders were hard at work cleaning, under the leadership of SANCO Brach Chairperson, Nkosinathi Ndwandwe and Ext 7 Ward Councillor, Nnana Banda.
Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) and Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) MMC’s of Social Development, Mmakgomo Raikane and Dimakatso Malisa visited the family.
The two MMC’s donated food parcels, blankets and mattresses to the family.
Raikane said there is a need for awareness programs about the fires in the community. She told Sedibeng Ster that they have put in place such a program to help community.
Malisa said they will provide the family with food parcels for the next three months.
“We as Emfuleni Social Development will assist where we can, especially for Gogo to get her ID. We don’t promise much, but we will assist as much as we can,” she said.
The family lost everything in the fire, including the children’s birth certificates. Apart from receiving food parcels from social development organisations, local business and community members also contributed clothing.
