Suspects flee scene at operation

VEREENIGING. – Vereeniging SAPS Station Commander Brigader Sonja Slabbert recently thanked all the armed forces and members of the community who helped with the arrest of a suspect.
This happened when Vereeniging SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police, Emfuleni and Midvaal Traffic including the Gauteng Community Safety conducted a joint operation in a form of road block on the R82 near Roshnee.
Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says, “A red Etios with four occupants was pulled over. Its licence disc was scanned and it read that it belonged to a silver BMW.
We immediately pulled it over but the driver sped off in the direction of De-deur and a chase ensued.” Funda states that the driver of the Etios ran over a pedestrian next to the De-deur filling station and also hit an advertising board after which it came to a standstill.
“All four occupants jumped out and fled towards the veld. At this time, our Public Order Unit showed up. One suspect (38) was arrested.
In the suspect’s car we recovered two police firearms, jewellery, a TV set and cell phones. We further found out that the arrested suspect was on parole for armed robbery.
He had another pending case of armed robbery. On further investigations it was found that the suspects were involved in a house robbery that took place in Cas Martens Street in Sonlandpark earlier that morning.
Funda adds that the arrested suspect will appear in Vereeniging Magistrates Court to answer to charges of possession of stolen property, contravening parole, possession of a hijacked vehicle and the unlawful possession of firearms.
“The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in a serious but stable condition. Our investigations are ongoing and hopefully the three suspects that are still at large will be arrested soon,” Funda concludes.
