Cop shines at national tennis competition

VEREENIGING. - Captain Rami Elias Matsose (45), from the Vereeniging Police Station, recently took part in the annual South African Police Services (SAPS) National Tennis Championships that took place in Durban.

Capt Matsose won two gold trophies after he was able to give an outstanding performance in the category of open mixed doubles where he teamed up with Captain Yonela Mpumane and garnered first place as well as the Men’s 45 plus singles where he also came out tops winning a gold trophy.
“This was history in the making where the Sedibeng Cluster was able to get two gold trophies at the national championships.
I am very happy because I have been working towards this kind of an achievement for 10 years.”
Capt Matsose said that he was able to achieve this because of his commitment to training regularly with his partner, Sello Sereko. He started playing tennis at a very young age on the dusty streets of Sharpeville.
His trainer at that time, Tete Sontaha, used to take young people from around the township and teach them the sport. “For me, tennis is a family sport and I have always loved it. It was a unique sport and I developed a passion for it.”
Capt Matsose says that his participation in the sport also contributed to moving him away from negative things and to being disciplined.
Capt Matsose obtained national colours as a result of his outstanding performance at the championships.
