ANCWL march against gender-based violence

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Sedibeng African Nationals Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) and its allies chanted outside the Magistrate Court in Vanderbijlpark last Thursday. This was in support against gender-based violence and the recent kidnapping of Amy‘Leigh de Jager.

Hundreds of women holding placards aloof arrived in the early morning but after a few hours, they were suddenly informed that no proper arrangement for the march was communicated with the Vanderbijlpark Chief Magistrate. The marchers alleged that they were told that the Magistrate who presided over the case declined to receive their memorandum, other marchers complained that they had gone through considerable
lengths such as arranging bus transport to show their support, only to be turned away.
Fatty Mnguni, Regional Deputy Secretary of the ANCWL, said the reason the Magistrate did not accept the memorandum is because the application was supposedly late. She said they were told to make an official presentation this Friday, September 27.

”My body is not your crime scene.Wearing a skirt is not invite for rape,” these were some of the placards held aloof outside the Magistrate Court.
The three accused suspects, charged with kidnapping of the grade R pupil from Kollege Park Primary School, appeared at the court on September 19 and 20. The suspects who demanded a ransom of R2 million, are Pieter Jacobs van Zyl (50), Laetitia Nel (40) and Tharina Human (27). The kidnappers abandoned their plan the following day and dropped the victim off near Shakespears Inn in Vanderbijlpark on September 3, around 02:00 the morning. The matter was postponed to October 1 and the suspects remain in custody.
