Motswako artists proud of their heritage

“We offer a range of lessons in various disciplines of the arts all for the small amount of R250; this is a once-off. Children attend these classes every Saturday.”

EVATON. – Motswako MADCAMP celebrated Heritage Day on Monday through a showcase of various acts by their youngest group involved in music, theatre, dance and visual arts.

The event was held at Motswako Arts Centre, Wiberforce, Evaton.

Parents and the community at large attended the event to witness children as young as 10 carrying out their different activities after undergoing training for the past few weeks. Activities included singing, traditional dancing, short stories and even gumboot dancing. Abbey Maeane from Motswako said that the initiative to start training young kids in the arts serves as a tool that will help kids find their passion, keep them away from negative things and to also give them a wider range of career choices.

“We offer a range of lessons in various disciplines of the arts all for the small amount of R250; this is a once-off. Children attend these classes every Saturday.”

Maeane invited more parents to come and register their kids in order to get them to tap into their talents.

Matshidiso Phakoa (47) a parent who has two kids at Motswako, said that she was very happy with the progress her kids had made. “I am very happy about this initiative.

“The kids have really worked hard because they have only been here for a few weeks but they can already perform for a crowd. Instead of roaming the streets over weekends, I know that my kids are here doing something productive with their lives.”
