Vaal River City Marathon a great success: Mazibuko

The Oliphant Institute of Leadership CEO, Molefi Oliphant, echoed Mazibuko’s sentiments when he told Sedibeng Ster Sport that he was encouraged by the positive response.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The Gauteng MEC for Sports and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko, hailed the 2nd Annual Vaal River City Marathon a great success.

The race was held at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark over the weekend and it was organised by the Oliphant Institute of Leadership in conjunction with Athletics Vaal Triangle, Emfuleni Local Municipality  (ELM), Sedgars and Rand Water.

Speaking to media, Mazibuko said the marathon was a great success in many ways, taking into consideration that the athletes it attracted came from as far afield as Kenya, Ethiopia and other neighbouring countries. She was also full of praise for the organisers for hosting the marathon.

Mazibuko who was in the company of the  ELM MMC of Sports and Recreation, Sylvia Sengoatsi.

Sengoatsi said that the attendance was overwhelming with Sedibeng residents, young and old, coming in great numbers to support it.

The day’s programme kicked off with the 42km and 21km, which were described as the toughest competitions for both male and female runners in a quest to qualify for  the Soweto Marathon and Comrades Marathon.

“As the organization we want to thank everyone who made this event a success, especially our stakeholders. I have no doubt that we will continue to host this event taking into consideration its success for the past two years,” he said.
