Vaal River City Marathon attracts masses

The Vaal River City Marathon is the first sporting event of its kind to take place in Sedibeng to date. Last year this event attracted the Who’s Who in sports, politics and community. SA bantamweight IBO Champion Gideon Buthelezi is among the notable names set to take part in this year’s Vaal River City Marathon.

 

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Vanderbijlpark will come to a standstill when the Oliphant Institute of Leadership hosts, in conjunction with Athletics Vaal Triangle,  the 2nd Annual Vaal River City Marathon at Isak Steyl Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Molife Oliphant,  founder of the Oliphant Institute of Leadership, said 3 000 runners have already registered to take part in this year’s Vaal River City Marathon. However, Oliphant said registration is still open and people who are interested can go and register at Sportsman’s Wear  House in Vanderbijlpark.

Oliphant also revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that they expected runners from as far afield as Ethiopia and other parts of the continent:

“As the Oliphant Institute of Leadership we are delighted to announce that this year’s Vaal River City Marathon will attract thousands of participants,  taking into consideration last year’s success. “Everything went according to plan as far as preparations are concerned and I want to take this opportunity to thank our partners and stakeholders for their contribution to the success of this initiative,” said the former Safa President.

The race is expected to start at 05:00 in the morning under the following categories: 42km, 10 km and 5km.
