Thunderstorm claims toddler’s life

The mother, Sinnah Nyama, apparently searched for Karabo but after a while gave up, went home and went to bed.The next morning she asked relatives to help her search for the child.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Police are investigating the tragic death of two year old Karabo Nyama. The toddler and her mother were walking home to Bophelong during a thunderstorm on Sa-turday at 18:30 when she was apparently struck by lightning.

According to her mother, Karabo was then swept away by water at the intersection of the R57 and R59, better known as Mabulala robot. The mother, Sinnah Nyama, apparently searched for Karabo but after a while gave up, went home and went to bed.The next morning she asked relatives to help her search for the child.

Police spokesperson Captain Teboho Lephotho said the mother reported the incident the following day around 11:00. The 40- year-old mother of three, told police that Karabo was holding an umbrella when she was struck by lightning. According to her it was too dark and she couldn’t find her.

Asked why she went home without reporting the matter, she said: “I was confused. I even lost my handbag and cellphone.”Relatives found little Karabo’s lifeless body, as well as the handbag, in the stream.The Police Water Wing arrived at the scene with quad bikes to retrieve her body.
