Horrific accident claims four lives

High impact crash on M1 between Woodmead and Marlboro Drive

A horrific accident on the M1 between Woodmead and Marlboro Drive claimed the lives of four people this morning (Sunday 14 May 2017).

According to Chris Botha, Media Liaison Officer of Netcare 911, this group’s paramedics, the police and several other services responded to a collision on the M1 south near the Marlboro off ramp at 01h05 this morning. Reports from the scene indicated that three vehicles were involved in the crash. Two were found on the one side of the highway, the other one was on the other side leaving the north and south bound lanes closed.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and found accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles consistent with that of a high impact collision, scattered over a very large area. After examination, it was found that two people died on the scene, two were critically injured, while three miraculously escaped with moderate injuries.

Paramedics and firemen worked hand in hand to stabilise the injured at the scene. The two critically injured patients had to be placed on ventilators by the Advanced Life Support paramedics. After the patients were treated, the paramedics transported them to hospital for further care required.
Tragically two of the critically injured patients died soon after arriving at the hospital, leaving the death toll at four for this horrific collision.

The names of the people involved have not been released yet.

Details to the cause of the crash and preceding events are still speculative and will form part of the police investigation.
