Almost a week later, there is still no sign of missing Samkelo

Despite efforts by locals in finding Samkelo Gadu who was washed away by a heavy current river when crossing a low-lying bridge in Small Farm on Saturday, there is still no sign of his body.

EVATON – The police Search and Rescue Unit has been visiting the area since his disappearance and each day remains a traumatic experience for his family.

On Wednesday, February, 15, angry residents decided to enter the small river piercing through different kasis in the Vaal, to find missing Samkelo without luck.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Annah Katu (52) said they have lost hope in locating the 19-year-old.

“We have tried all we could to find the boy but all efforts made seem not to yield any good results. Some of our family members have tried to search on their own when police suspends the search, but nothing gives us hope,” she said.

“We are hoping one day we will receive the news that Samkelo’s body is found. She added that we are traumatized by this incident and can’t even sleep at night,” she added.

Anna said what makes matters worse is that the friend keeps changing stories when asked what happened.

“Since Saturday, we have been trying to get information from the friend, and he keeps changing stories daily. This is one reason that makes us lose hope in finding the young man,” she said.

Nhlanhla Kadu, uncle to the deceased said the search and rescue team from SAPS has left the family uninformed.

“We go to the scene every day and nothing from SAPS happens. What makes matters worse is the fact that they don’t even bother to give us information or feedback. It would be better to be told what happens. We see them arrive, walk along the river, sometimes fly over the river and they went,” he said.

“If it was a different race group, they would do a better job. They would brief them on what happens on a day to day. All we want is to find the body of Samkelo,” he said.
