SA well represented at AFCON

Gomes was hailed as a hero by his fellow countrymen for handling such a high-profile final with distinctions.

SEDIBENG.- Despite Bafana Bafana not been part of the African Cup Of Nation (AFCON) South Africa was well represented at this tournament which came to an end in Cameroon with Senegal crowned the African kings on Sunday night.

This was after they beat Egypt 4-2 on penalty kicks to be crowned the continent champions for the first time. The South African referee, Victor Gomes oversaw this nail biting final and he had an outstanding game.

South African’s including his colleagues were impressed with his performance on the night.  Gomes was never intimidated by this big occasion especially by those big stars from both sides.

The highlight of the game was when Gomes asked Egypt striker Mohamed Salah if he wants to be a referee after the Liverpool star complained with every decision he took against his side.

Gomes was hailed as a hero by his fellow countrymen for handling such a high-profile final with distinctions. Gomes is one of the best referees in PSL with many players and coaches regarding him as a no-nonsense referee.

He is not afraid to dish out cards being red or yellow to players whom their conducts behaviour is unsporting to say the least. He will go down in the history of South African football as one of the best match officials this country has ever produced to date.

Roger De Sa is one of the names that hoisted the South African flag high as the assistant coach of the AFCON losers’ finalist, Egypt. He is an assistant coach to the former Bafana Bafana Carlos Queiroz.  However, both were not on the bench when Egypt lost to Senegal on Sunday due to suspension.

However, they led Egypt to the final of the AFCON before being suspended for their misconducts.
