Skin care – one thing you wish you’d done a decade ago.

Over the years, skin care and aesthetics has evolved tremendously to include expert advice, cutting edge technology and science-based products for a wide range of skin concerns.

Many of the conditions we now struggle with, could have been prevented if we had all the information that is available to us today.

With the benefit of hindsight, what is the one thing you wish you’d done for your skin ten years ago?

Skin Care routine

Skin Renewal patient Thato Mmereki (@thatommereki), would have started with a good skin care routine from an earlier age,  including a cleanser, exfoliating product, serums, moisturiser and sunscreen to rejuvenate and revitalise his skin.

Thorough Cleansing

If Nabeela Jamal (@belleartistry_ ) could go back in time, she would have left her pimples alone, chosen proper cleansers instead of make-up wipes and avoided using harsh exfoliants every day. What Nabeela has learnt from Skin Renewal is that cleansing twice a day will remove all debris from the skin, and create a clean slate for the active product in your routine, to improve absorption. Over-exfoliating, and using harsh products like apricot kernel exfoliators can cause dehydration and increased oil production.

Tailored Advice

Marika Opperman (@moments.by.marika) found her glow once she received expert advice from one of Skin Renewal’s medical doctor and her aesthetic therapist, instead of making it up as she goes. She learned that no two skins are exactly the same, and professional advise on how to protect your type of skin and keep it supple, smooth, and glowing can prevent lots of future heartache.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, and sunscreen

All three patients would have started using sunscreen earlier in life. Age spots, leathery skin, freckles, a blotchy complexion, pigmentation, actinic keratoses (wart-like, rough, reddish patches of skin), and skin cancer can all be traced to sun- and UV light exposure. Studies have shown too that repeated UV exposure breaks down collagen, a protein that’s important for maintaining skin elasticity and strength.

Skin Renewals team of expert doctors and therapists reiterate the importance of using a sun screen all year around. While sunshine is important for the synthesis of Vitamin D in our bodies and for keeping our circadian clocks ticking accurately, long-term exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is harmful to our skin, causing premature aging and posing a risk of skin cancer. You may be wishing you’d been sun smart all those years ago.  But it’s never too late to start!

Being sun savvy means limiting your exposure to harsh sunlight and using effective sunscreens, such as those in the range offered by Skin Renewal.

Professional Treatments

Inadequate skin care, excessive UV exposure and pesky hormones will have left their mark over the years. Badly sun-damaged facial skin with pigmentation and deep, ingrained wrinkles is a challenging condition with no quick fix. The good news is that a wide range of effective treatments are available.

The best approach would be to book a consultation with a Skin Renewal Doctor. A combination of treatments like botulinum, dermal filler rejuvenation, laser rejuvenation, exfoliation treatments and injectable mesotherapy will be recommended, suited to your specific skin concerns to provide the optimal solution and transformation.

Starting professional treatments earlier in life has the advantage of stimulating the growth of new collagen and slowing the ageing process, thus leading to healthier skin in later years. Prevention is better than cure!

Remember it’s about a skincare journey that has no destination, ones skin is as dynamic as the environment in which it exists.

Looking ahead

Author, Robin Sharma, once said: “In hindsight everything is much clearer. The real trick in life is to turn hindsight into foresight that reveals insight.”

And so, with the insight gained from looking back ten years, what skin care routine might you begin today so that in a decade from now, you’ll be glad you did?
