Exercise caution this season

JOBURG – Fidelity Services Group head of marketing and communications Charnel Hattingh share seven safety tips for the season ahead.

As the warm weather sets in and families enjoy more days out, the community is reminded to exercise caution and safety.

According to Fidelity Services Group head of marketing and communications Charnel Hattingh, the relaxation of the lockdown regulations merely provides an opportunity for criminals.

“This is welcomed news and a boost for the economy, but we urge people to remain sensible and aware when attending events, visiting restaurants and pubs, travelling home late at night and entertaining at home,” she said.

Hattingh shares the following seven safety and security tips:

  •  Keep your personal belongings out of sight, in a secure bag, when out in public spaces such as restaurants and shopping centres.
  • Leave your valuables at home, or out of sight, when visiting parks or exercising outdoors. Do not wear earphones or exercise in remote areas.
  • When at home on a hot day, ensure that your security gates are locked with the keys removed before opening the windows and doors. Activate the outdoor beams and your electric fence if you are inside the house.
  • It is recommended to turn down your radio and take note of any car in your street when coming home after dark. Do not park up against your gate and then open it, allow space to drive away if need be. Once the gate is open, wait in the car with the doors locked until the gate is closed again.
  • Always let your family and friends know your whereabouts when leaving the house.
  • When entertaining at your home, never leave the gate open when waiting for guests to arrive. Guest should preferably park inside the property or alternatively, hire a security guard to watch over the cars packed on the street.
  • If you are planning to go away, inform your neighbours, security company and neighbourhood watch. Ensure that your alarm is in working condition and do not post your holiday plans or location while you are away.

“We urge all South Africans to continue adhering to Covid-19 protocols. We are happy to have more freedom in Level 2 of the lockdown, but in order for us to get out of lockdown completely in the future we must all play our part to combat the pandemic,” Hattingh concluded.
