Paddlers train on the Umzimkulu River in Underberg

CRAIGHALL PARK – Sean Evans paddled with his 15-year-old daughter Caitlyn while Luke Salmon was partnered with Kevin Middleton.

Craighall Park-based paddlers Sean Evans, Caitlyn Evans, Luke Salmon and Kevin Middleton enjoyed paddling down the Umzimkulu River recently.

The Drakensberg FNB Drak Challenge usually takes place annually on the Umzimkulu River in Underberg during the last week of January. However, due to the lockdown in January, the event was cancelled.

This did not deter a few Sandton paddlers from travelling to the area and paddling the course in small groups for safety as they had already booked accommodation for the event.

Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union said the river level was excitingly high due to rains and paddlers enjoyed a few days of rapids in good flow against the backdrop of scenic mountains. The trip also provided excellent training for the upcoming Dusi Canoe Marathon in March.

Paddlers kept their distance in boats but waited for each other around corners for safety.

They paddled 25km each day – good practice for the upcoming Dusi.
