Artist reaches for the sky

SANDTON – While the rollercoaster of the year continues, Botha remains grateful for all the opportunities that he was able to pursue.

It was a big night for local artist Jacquin Botha who made his artistic debut at the launch of Sandton’s latest establishment the Hotel Sky.

Botha’s artwork was exhibited along the likes of iconic greats Dr Esther Mahlangu, Sidney Beck, Thonton Kabeya, Neda Roodaki, Thokozani Madonsela and Stian Deetlefs at the opening of the hotel in the heart of Sandton on 19 November.

Having made a name for himself in the graphic design and photography landscapes, this was a particularly major milestone for Botha’s art career as it has always been one of his greatest passions. “Till this moment everything still feels like a bit of a dream, surreal indeed,” he said.

“I only literally started painting during the lockdown, asking my children to bring me their favourite toy so that I could paint it. Now to have my artwork alongside these icons is an honour and a privilege.”

Botha has always admired the impact that art can have on anyone and anything, it does not necessarily need to be a painting or a drawing as photography and graphic design can have the same unqiue effect.

Some of Botha’s most iconic work includes creative directing Standard Banks’s ‘What’s Your Next’ campaign, which was followed by the ‘Your Next Million’ and ‘My Fearless Next’ campaign. He also has a pivotal role in local rapper Cassper Nyovest’s renowned ‘Fill Up’ campaign.

“It is still such a thrill to see how your work impacts brands, people and communities. To see an individuals’ career take off because you’ve given them a chance remains my favourite type of accolade,” he said.

While the rollercoaster of this year continues, Botha remains grateful for all the opportunities that he has been able to pursue. “I want to thank my wife, mom and dad and everyone else for their supporting role thus far.”

For the remainder of the year, however, he looks forward to wrapping up his remaining art commissions and extending his wallpaper collection with WCI Wallpapers, a Sandton-based company which offers contemporary wallpaper.
