The City of Joburg hits a million followers on Twitter

JOBURG – The City' of Joburg's social media account has mastered the art of humour while conveying important government messages.

The City of Joburg’s Twitter account @CityofJoburgZA, has become the first municipal-run account to have one million followers in South Africa and Africa.

The City’s online communications deputy director, Tumelo Komape, attributes this milestone to sharing funky, relevant and useful information with residents which increase engagement.
“Our followers feel like we are real and the account is managed by real people because we make government messages on social media, friendly by using memes and visuals to add fun to messaging, which is needed to draw attention to usually boring government messaging adding lingo and memes,” said Komape.
“People like to follow people, not brands, hence influencer marketing is on the rise. We give the account a human face using initials for our tweets or posts.”
